Danish design studio Space Copenhagen has completed the interior design of Esmée, a new restaurant in Copenhagen. The modern concept conjures a nostalgic nod to the classic style of French brasseries, while also promoting comfort, mirth, and optimism inspired by the eateries of Southern Europe and the Mediterranean.
“For Esmée, we wanted to create the feeling of a fun, lively, urban orangery by bringing the verdant courtyards into the space and by using a lot of plants and trees throughout,” says Space Copenhagen cofounder Signe Bindslev Henriksen. “The use of the color green in a multitude of shades, both on the walls and on the upholstery has created a light and naturalistic tapestry.” The firm partnered with Studio Oliver Gustav to create the indoor greenery arrangement and source the dramatic Italian cabinets.
To the left of the entrance, a distinctive bar finished in high-gloss deep plum hues echoes the aesthetic of traditional Copenhagen abodes. Natural stone counters contrast a sensual palette of dark red and burgundy expressed via upholstered leather seating and gently illuminated by handcrafted wicker lighting suspended above the intimate tables.
Subdued neutral tones of gray and green allow for an organic transition to the dining room, where mirrors installed on the walls create depth along with marble-style paint. The open kitchen serves as a key fixture of the dining room, beyond which sits a multipurpose room that accommodates private dining. Furthermore, an alfresco area ensconced in trees is populated with alu-rattan dining chairs and cumaru hardwood benches equipped to patina over time.
