Hong Kong-based designer André Fu has completed an opulent new restaurant, Sézanne, at the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi. Replacing the former French concept MOTIF, which Fu also designed, Sézanne draws upon the boutique personality of the hotel to instill a dining experience that is intimate, subtle, and personalized.
“I wanted to reflect the ‘hidden gem’ sensibility of Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi,” Fu says. “My vision revolves around creating a duet of dining experiences that are set against the urbanity of its buzzling Tokyo Station neighborhood. The mindset here is about cultivating a sense of escape from the city with two destinations that are highly contrasting and layered.”
An embodiment of relaxed luxury, the gastronomic concept is clad in French-style paneling and populated with velvet chairs that inject the lounge with a vintage flair. Set against skyline views of Tokyo, the lounge space is also accented by a sculptural artwork by British artist Annie Morris that delivers a colorful focal point.
Intimacy prevails in the dining room, where a bespoke hand-tufted carpet floods the space with silver and gray hues. Art Deco motifs abound along with artistic sand patterns inspired by Japanese Zen gardens, while eucalyptus wood is juxtaposed with mud paint to showcase wabi-sabi influences.
A decanter station made from solid Carrara marble serves as a the sculptural heart of the interior, which is also lined with bespoke light fixtures made from textured bronze and translucent cloud glass to capture the refined blue, gray, and dusty pink color story. Inside the private dining room, a window provides diners a glimpse into a satellite kitchen for an immersive culinary experience.
Across from Sézanne, Fu has also unveiled the contemporary French bistro Maison Marunouchi. Anchored by a palette of tangerine, olive green, and rattan textures, the recently opened concept is populated by bespoke bronze tables that instill a modern Parisian flair, while lush greenery offers respite from the urban jungle outside.
