The Hong Kong Bankers Club has inaugurated its new 21,500-square-foot home in the heart of the city-state’s Central Business District.
Designed by locally based In Situ & Partners, the destination modernizes the members club’s identity while nodding to its British and Chinese heritage. “The new contemporary look mirrors the evolution of the city’s finance industry,” says In Situ & Partners principal Yacine Bensalem. “The change of location was an opportunity to reinvent the space with a modern interpretation of traditional British club culture and Chinese design elements.”
Mirrors and varying matte and glossy finishes create a sense of illusion in the arrival tunnel, while the rest of the interior reflects a more timeless ethos. Set against striking burgundy lacquer panels and gold accents evocative of traditional Chinese aesthetics, velvet armchairs and banquettes upholstered in blue leather reference classic British clubhouse motifs.
Fabric and wood panels offset shimmering lacquer throughout the interior, which also features luxe flourishes, like a fluted metal bar finished in bronze and topped with black Sahara marble. Herringbone parquet floors in the bar area are echoed with gray stone in peripheral spaces as well as black and white stone that lines in the tropical indoor terrace. “While each area has different, often monochromatic, aesthetic codes, they are all interconnected to create fluidity in an introverted space,” Bensalem adds.
While spaces like the bar and galleria are configured to facilitate networking and socializing, several private rooms afford privacy with textured glass doors. The Dragon, the onsite Cantonese eatery, can even be divided into eight smaller rooms, each equipped with acoustic panels as well. Other opulent F&B options include contemporary Western concept the Treasury and private dining and lounge destination the Harmony. Connecting each of the venues is the Gallery. A new addition to the club, the Gallery provides added lounge and meeting space outfitted with timber walls, stone floors, and fabric wallcoverings.
