théATRE, a contemporary lifestyle brand centered on tea, has debuted the Shanjuchajing Concept Store in Beijing.
The serene urban retreat was crafted by Tokyo-based kooo architects. The firm’s design concept offers a journey through curated spaces—ranging from an open, airy sales area to a secluded lounge, and culminating with a hidden VIP tea room.
The use of tea-earth brick
The store’s standout feature is its use of tea-earth brick, which covers 80 percent of the walls. Created through a low-carbon rammed-earth pressing technique, the bricks are made using tea processing leftovers, making them both biodegradable and reusable.
The versatility of tea-earth brick allows it to be used for the walls, doors, and even furniture. Its subtle color and texture variations—from natural soil tones to visible tea leaf particles—conjures a sensory experience that invites exploration.
A serene atmosphere
Complementing the tea-earth brick, solid wood panels with natural edges are used in high-touch areas.
South-facing windows, accentuated by wooden grilles that unify the store’s façade, flood the shop with natural light. Plus, linen curtains soften the light and provide privacy while creating a warm, inviting atmosphere.
The tea bar, crafted with intentional simplicity, features a lower countertop to foster relaxed, intimate interactions between customers and tea servers.
Designed to recall a traditional tea house, the tranquil VIP tea room boasts a sloped ceiling and ample natural light. The space, accessible through a darkened preparation area, offers a contrast to heightens patrons’ sense of discovery.
