Ukrainian art institutions are scrambling to save cultural artifacts, Dezeen reveals research about women in the architecture field, and last call for HD Awards entries. All that and more in this week’s Five on Friday.
Only one in five architects are women
Despite the number of women in top jobs at architecture firms doubling in the past five years, they are still underrepresented in the industry with men occupying four out of five key roles. New research from Dezeen demonstrates that women now make up 21 percent of the highest-ranking jobs at the 100 largest architecture firms around the globe. While the figure indicates a move in the right direction, it falls demonstrably short of achieving gender parity. “The data shows there is clearly much more as an industry we need to do, yet time goes by, and little seems to change,” says Sadie Morgan, cofounder of London studio dRMM.
Top hospitality companies see increased demand for travel
A promising sign after the downturn in travel over the past two years, Americans are ready to spend more on travel and entertainment, thanks to a combination of declining daily COVID-19 cases and the easing of restrictions. In a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, executives from top companies in the industry including Marriott, Expedia Group, MGM Resorts International, and Wynn Resorts are seeing renewed vigor for restaurants, hotels, cruises, and theme parks. Although the wave of Omicron infections put a damper in travel and demand for hotels, it seems to be temporary, and executives feel optimistic. “We don’t view demand as anything more than delayed—we don’t think it’s diminished,” says American Airlines Group president Robert Isom.
Paris approves new landscape design for the Eiffel Tower grounds
In 2019, Paris held a global competition for a redesign of the grounds surrounding the Eiffel Tower. Beating out three other finalists, Gustafson Porter + Bowman was chosen to reimagine the landscape and the Paris City Council greenlit the firm’s design this week, reports ArchDaily. The plan will increase green areas surrounding the landmark by 35 percent, add over 200 new trees, and pedestrianize additional areas. A central sight will connect the Place du Trocadéro, the Palais de Chaillot, the Pont d’Iéna, the Champ de Mars, and the Ecole Militaire, unifying the areas. The project will be completed in three phases, with the first phase unveiled in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics. In the next two years, the roundabout at Trocadero will also transform into lawn terraces, more plants will be added to the Varsovie fountain, and greenery will be added to the Quai Branly.
Ukraine’s largest art museum rushes to protect artifacts
In Lviv, Ukraine, employees of the Andrey Sheptytsky National Museum are on a mission to protect the museum’s artifacts and paintings from possible destruction by Russia. According to CNN, the museum, which is the largest in Ukraine, houses the country’s most complete collection of sacred medieval art and religious manuscripts, some of which are now packed in cardboard boxes or makeshift crates—anything that can be used to add a layer of protection. Inside, the walls have been stripped, with many items relegated to the basement. Although that may not prove to be enough, depending on the intensity of attacks. “Today, we see how Russia is shelling residential areas (and) even people that are evacuating,” says National Museum Director of Lviv Ihor Kozhan. “They guaranteed they wouldn’t but now we can’t trust them. And we need to take care of our heritage because this is our national treasure.”
