The Fairmont Royal York in Toronto has debuted a new hotel within a hotel known as Fairmont Gold. Designed by New York-based studio Champalimaud, the Fairmont Gold is home to 106 opulent guestrooms, studio suites, and one-bedroom suites spread across floors 12 through 18 of the landmark structure.
“We were honored and inspired to have the chance to work with such a historic property. As designers, and ‘cultural anthropologists,’ we were privileged to fuse the hotel’s past into a wonderfully majestic and elegant future with the redesign of Fairmont Gold,” says Champalimaud partner Jon Kastl. “Our vision was to stay true to Fairmont Royal York’s timelessness while creating a sophisticated, metropolitan feel in a luxury residence. Every element of the design was carefully selected, with European influences woven throughout, to lend a subtle hint to Canada’s English and French heritage.”
Bespoke, handlaid mosaic stones and locally sourced artwork welcome visitors to the 18th floor, where a penthouse-style lobby lounge is situated. The design warmly interprets the hotel’s history through a contemporary lens and bold visual statements inspired by the hotel’s original Art Deco geometries. From marble countertops to striking headboards signature, domestically crafted furniture and details span the interior to convey opulence as well as a residential-style ambiance.
