The 400-room Stanford Court Hotel in San Francisco is hot off the heels of a multimillion-dollar redesign that reflects the innovation that fuels the city. Numerous historical elements are incorporated into the renovation as well to honor the hotel’s namesake, philanthropist and railroad mogul Leland Stanford.
Welcoming guests to the hotel is a 3-ton, 10-foot-tall penguin sculpture crafted by local artist Beniamino Bufano, which for 45 years sat at the corner of Pine and Powell streets. An expansive custom mural based on photographer Eadweard Muybridge’s Sallie Gardner at a Gallop also adorns the lobby with a photo series capturing a horse’s gait in 24 images. On the ceiling of the hotel’s bar is a scene from the legendary car chase through the streets of San Francisco from the 1968 movie Bullitt, starring Steve McQueen. The lobby features a music room and a self-serve F&B market, while digital art installations and a tech library also reflect the Bay Area’s emphasis on the tech industry.
The design also emphasizes sustainability, incorporating elements such as low-flow toilets, electric vehicle charging docks, and access to extensive electronic reading materials. The redesign has also yielded the hotel’s new restaurant Seven Stills Nob Hill, the third social space rolled out by local craft brewer and distiller Seven Stills.
