A new retail concept, Canal St., has debuted within a historic structure in the former French Concession of Shanghai. Spread across more than 3,200 square feet, the aptly named clothing store channels the ethos of downtown Manhattan in a design executed by Sò Studio.
The first floor of Canal St. resembles a New York City subway car, complete with an expansive horizontal layout that also hosts a café space. Sidewalk grilles, manhole covers, neon lights, and steel and brick elements further inform the New York aesthetic. Original building details like wood floors and steel beams remain intact to support the theme as well.
The interior is also outfitted with various box installations, including a green glass box suspended above the stairs and rectangular green acrylic floor props. Each box features tube lighting and panel lights that establish a soft internal illumination.
