At a glance: In Sydney’s Surry Hills, the Tyne House Brick factory was home to one of Australia’s first ceramic kilns. Now it’s being revitalized as the 264-room Ace Hotel Sydney, the brand’s first foray into the Southern Hemisphere. Nods to the Australian desert appear in a “ochre red off-form concrete staircase in the lobby and textural straw walls in the guestrooms,” says Brad Wilson, CEO and partner at Ace Hotel Group. For the rooftop restaurant, stone sourced from Australian quarries will meld with Tasmanian pine and stringybark eucalyptus grown in New South Wales.
