Trailborn Hotels & Resorts has expanded its national portfolio to the rugged Pacific coastline with the debut of Hill House at Trailborn Mendocino.

The property—designed in collaboration with HBA San Francisco—marks the first phase of the larger Trailborn Mendocino campus, which will serve as a gateway to Northern California’s redwood forests and wine country.

Revitalizing Hill House

Perched above Mendocino Village, the quaint 44-room retreat breathes new life into the historic former Hill House Inn. Sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding bluffs frame the ocean view guestrooms, welcoming gathering spaces, and flexible event venues made with both travelers and the local community in mind.

Original architectural elements—including the millwork, original bar, and main staircase—have been preserved and reinterpreted alongside updated interiors, refreshed landscaping, and inviting communal spaces that honor the property’s history. Public spaces are designed around hearth lounges, garden-facing seating, and indoor-outdoor flow to foster connection. A dedicated Cabot Cove Detective Library pays homage to “Murder, She Wrote,” which famously filmed on the property.

“Our goal was to preserve what people have always loved about Hill House while thoughtfully reimagining it for a new generation of travelers,” says Trailborn cofounder and co-CEO Mike Weiss. “From the guest rooms and public spaces to the amenities and programming, every aspect of the experience was designed to reflect the character, beauty, and spirit of Mendocino.”

Amenities grounded in nature

Expansive grounds emphasize a deep connection to the natural environment. The property features walking paths, picnic areas, and a dedicated sound and movement studio for yoga, forest bathing, and more. For guests looking to venture offsite, curated excursions include sea cave kayaking, horseback riding along the coast, and regional winery tours.

A versatile dining concept serving pizza, cocktails, and desserts will complement Hill House Wine & Grocer as well.

What’s next for Trailborn Mendocino

“Hill House marks Trailborn’s West Coast debut and the beginning of a long-term commitment to Mendocino,” says Ben Weinberg, cofounder and co-CEO of Trailborn. “Together with the Mendocino Hotel, we’re honored to help revitalize two beloved landmarks, elevating them for the future while preserving the character and sense of place that have made them meaningful to the community for generations.”

The second phase of Trailborn Mendocino, the Mendocino Hotel, will open in early 2027 with additional guest rooms, a new restaurant, and revitalized public spaces, completing a year-round destination for locals and visitors.
