Bäcoshop Debuts in LA

Los Angeles-based design practice Bells + Whistles has completed work on the Bäcoshop from chef Josef Centeno. Located in LA’s Culver City neighborhood, the new concept has debuted within a fully overhauled 1,500-square-foot storefront.

The transformation of the space saw the replacement of darkly tinted, black-trimmed windows with clear glass framed ones with poppy-colored steel. Textured stucco was also swapped for a smooth white finish to serve as a versatile backdrop for dynamic mint-green geometric graphics designed by Bells + Whistles principal Barbara Rourke. Similar graphics also adorn the exterior and the polished concrete floors.

The linear interior is awash with natural light, accentuating the cuisine-inspired color palette. Low drywall ceilings were removed to expose natural wood beams, and a massive marble countertop clad with white and blue clay tiles and brass details is installed along with a clear, glass-paneled partition. Custom tables and banquettes, cool gray wood chairs and handmade, custom ceramic pendants punctuate the setting as well, while eclectic fiber artwork from Himo Art softens the atmosphere.
