Banyan Group has debuted Ubuyu, a Banyan Tree Escape in Tanzania. Set within Ruaha National Park, the intimate six-villa retreat extends the brand’s focus on discovery-driven travel into East Africa for the first time.

Ruaha National Park sits at the convergence of East Africa’s savannah ecosystems and the Miombo woodlands of the south. The park is home to one of Africa’s largest elephant populations, the highest concentration of lions on the continent, and one of the last refuges for the endangered African wild dog, along with more than 570 bird species.

Six villas along the riverbank

Ubuyu comprises six private villas, positioned along the Great Ruaha River, that feature plunge pools and open, expansive layouts that frame views across the savannah, mountains, and rolling hills.

The one- and two-bedroom villas reference traditional Maasai circular dwellings, incorporating open-air showers and expansive decks oriented to capture sunrise views and passing wildlife. The Ubuyu Private Retreat, a three-suite residence shaped around the curve of the river, boasts a 360-degree rooftop terrace and fire pit lounge.

A design rooted in the wilderness

Italian firm FABRIC Integrated Architecture led the architectural and interior design of the property.

Ubuyu’s form takes cues from the flowing curves of the Great Ruaha River and the circular layout of traditional Maasai homesteads, with villas constructed from locally sourced clay, timber, and thatch, alongside Mninga wood furnishings handcrafted by local artisans. The design centers on a dialogue with the Ruaha landscape, leaning on earth tones and natural textures to create a contemporary interpretation of place rather than a conventional safari aesthetic.

Solar power and locally sourced water support a low-impact footprint.

Gathering spaces at Ubuyu, a Banyan Tree Escape

At the center of the retreat sits the Living Room, an open-air gathering space inspired by the Maasai enkang, or family homestead, where guests and Escape Hosts convene around a central fire pit. The adjoining Open Kitchen serves a plant-forward menu built on seasonal ingredients sourced from nearby farms and villages.

Guests can enjoy views of the river and bushland from the rooftop Mganga Bar, which serves drinks infused with native botanicals.

Along the riverbank, the open-air Maji Spa offers treatments rooted in indigenous healing traditions using local oils and herbs.

Each stay at Ubuyu is guided by a dedicated Escape Host, who serves as guide and storyteller, drawing on knowledge of the land, wildlife, and surrounding communities. The property also incorporates conservation and community engagement through the Ruaha Conservation Project, with visits structured around wildlife welfare and cultural exchanges with the Wahehe community.
