Judged by West Elm president Alex Bellos and West Elm Contract Furniture’s vice president of design Paulo Kos, the HD/West Elm Student Product Competition tasked students with designing a family of tables that are aesthetically neutral and able to work with a number of seating heights. In addition to receiving a $5,000 prize, the winning student will work with West Elm to refine their designs and produce a selection of them.
Andrew Jacobs of Savannah College of Art and Design is the winner of the second annual competition for his Volum collection.

“The tables within this collection are minimal in form, creating a platform in which the materials can shine,” explains Jacobs. “All of the chosen materials are visually engaging and heavy on texture as well. When minimal form is joined with rich materials, minimal design is no longer sterile, but personable and intimate.”
“We were impressed by how Andrew combined a cohesive and elegant formal language with functionality for commercial spaces,” says judge Paulo Kos. “His use of mixed materials and monolithic forms dovetailed perfectly with the West Elm aesthetic.”
Additionally, Cathy Chang of Savannah College of Art and Design is this year’s finalist for her Collection Ï€, which “embraces the concept of perimeter by highlighting geometric shapes with jewel like structures,” she says.

Both Jacobs and Chang will be honored at the 16th annual HD Awards ceremony on October 20, 2020 at Cipriani 25 Broadway in New York. Tickets are available for purchase here.
