San Francisco-based architecture firm Obata Noblin Office (ONO) has unveiled Chateau Grand Rapids, a modern dining space and wine bar with nostalgic French charm, in Michigan.
Chateau Grand Rapids, owned by husband-and-wife duo Chris and Allaire Swart, transforms from a bright, bustling café by day to a moody, ambient wine bar by night, allowing the couple to share their passion for coffee and wine with the community.
Timelessness is a hallmark of the space, where original materials, warm tones, and soft lighting unfold within the tan brick walls and ornamental tin ceiling of an early 1900s building.
The character of the space is preserved and enhanced by classic French bistro furnishings, like iconic bentwood chairs, a custom white oak bench that spans the primary dining room, and a wine glass shelf suspended from brass rods.
A fluted glass hanging shelf, emitting a soft glow, serves as a striking lighting element above the long marble bar, which emphasizes the room’s length.
Emerald green velvet upholstery lines the dining benches, offering a vivid contrast to the natural palette. This rich, bold hue continues into the back lounge, where Venetian plaster and painted brick envelop the room and the original concrete floor has been refinished with a warm terrazzo texture to complete the cozy, intimate atmosphere of Chateau Grand Rapids.
