Another Country, a bar offering cocktails, bites, and vinyl, is now open in New York’s Union Square.
Owned by longtime friends and industry veterans Mark Connell and Timothy Jenkins, Another Country is named after one of the pair’s favorite James Baldwin novels and marks their first hospitality venture together.
The design of 77-seat space—overseen by Lisa Ekle of e.g. projects with millwork by Big Bear Custom Design—is bold yet cozy, with a midcentury touch. Low ceilings set the stage for a moody palette and low-profile lighting.
Warm, inviting textures—such as cork, white oak, repurposed original pine flooring, soft upholstery, travertine countertops, and textured plaster walls—were employed to patina over time.
The bar is the centerpiece of the space, glowing within the dark room thanks to gold plaster ceilings, indirect lighting, mirrored backsplash, and an illuminated glass-and-mirror oak shelf designed to house the vinyl collection.
Moving past the bar and front seating area, an extra-wide corridor, which offers additional seating, leads to a large back room for events and gatherings. The room—dubbed Private Joy as a nod to Prince—is wrapped in vibrant floral wallpaper that lends whimsy and color to the hideaway.
All of the vinyl on display and played at Another Country is from Jenkins’ personal collection. “At Another Country, we hope to reach your spirit,” says Jenkins. “Be it the music, the food, the drink, our kind staff, or a combination of all, we hope you’ll leave a little lifted.”
