In Ukraine’s capital city of Kyiv lies Ethno, a sophisticated, modern restaurant infused with ethnic Ukrainian elements.
Designed by local firm ZIKZAK Architects, the interior of Ethno is anchored by two branching trees that symbolize a connection to cultural and familial roots.
A “vyshyvanka” or Ukrainian embroidered shirt, serves as a leitmotif throughout the space. Delicate red cords, for example, hang from the trees, representing the thread used in the traditional embroidery. This is exhibited alongside other cultural details including handmade panels, “motanky” rag dolls, and clay dishes.
Ethno presents a warm, pleasant atmosphere thanks to thoughtful lighting and decorative materials, such as parquet flooring with metal inlays, decorative plaster, and burnt wood.
A bar at the entrance serves as a welcome area. Here, symbols stitched with red thread weave through metal squares, complemented by a large suspended structure reminiscent of the roof of a Ukrainian house.
Beyond the bar is a zone with tables for two, where the eye is drawn to decorative warm lamps wrapped in red fabric that adds depth and a dramatic flair.
In the central hall is a spacious sofa for large groups. The layout of the restaurant also offers seating for more intimate meetings, where the theme transitions to a more romantic ambiance with darker wall decorations, black furniture, and soft accent lighting.
