Knead Hospitality + Design has unveiled its latest culinary concept, Gatsby, in the Capitol Riverfront section of Washington, DC. Inspired by the Roaring Twenties, the new eatery marks the fourth collaboration between Knead and locally based design firm //3877.
The interior is animated by an authentic, glamorous design scheme that conjures nostalgia. “We’ve built an incredible relationship with Knead Hospitality + Design over the years,” says //3877 interior designer Meghan Scott. “Working with them is always a blast and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome of Gatsby. We’ve all been through so much last year and we’re thrilled that after a year of waiting to open during COVID, Gatsby is ready to welcome guests for the roaring 2020s.”
Spread across two floors and 9,000 square feet, Gatsby greets guests on the ground floor with a decorative rear wall clad with fumed aspen wood in an Art Deco style inspired by New York’s Chrysler Building. A hand-drawn mural adorns the adjacent wall, depicting a lavish social scene in the post-war era. A perforated bar canopy functions as the main focal point, recalling a flapper dress with its fringed detailing. The lavish fixture illuminates rich green basketweave tile layered upon a bullnose edge.
Overlooking the bar on the first floor, the mezzanine is accessed via a winding staircase that leads to an elevated environment outfitted with textural wallcoverings and murals. A metal installation above plush shagreen booths echoes a vintage bird cage as it descends from a celestial ceiling design reminiscent of Grand Central Station printed on acoustic fabric. Caramel-colored banquettes stretch across the perimeter of the space, which is flooded with natural light from floor-to-ceiling windows as well.
A 600-square-foot private dining room is also housed on the second floor, accented by a large walnut-arched frame and double-pocketed arched doors. Oxblood red tiles complement cream marquetry-style wallcoverings below 12-foot-high ceilings, while oval mirrors and Art Deco-style chandeliers add sparkle.
