Major Food Group has debuted its restoration of New York’s iconic Grill Room at the former Four Seasons Restaurant. Now the Grill, the restaurant’s opening marks the first stage of a total overhaul of the dining space, with chef and partner Mario Carbone at the helm. Locally based restoration architect Annabelle Selldorf led the refresh efforts, while designer William T. Georgis reimagined interior elements.
The 60-year-old building is refreshed with striking color and nuance. The large host stand is topped with an elaborate floral design, while art from 1958 frames the entryway. The eatery’s famed staircase has also been revitalized along with a sculptural new lighting system. Original architect Philip Johnson’s iconic Brno chairs have been reproduced for the space with Marie Nichols chain curtain design. Materials range from dandrige ombré horsehair and spinneybeck leather. Appointed with four large square tables, the Grill’s elevated balcony now features an elegant perch overlooking the dining room.
The Grill is also linked to Major Food Group other restoration project within the space, the Pool. The Pool features a wall-sized sculpture comprising overflowing flora as well as a handmade Mother of Pearl bar. The restaurant’s lounge further expands the restaurant, complete with a blue-tinted palette, plush custom furniture, hand-knotted wall textiles, soaring ceilings, and sweeping views.
