SH Hotels & Resorts, in collaboration with Japan-based developer Mori Trust, has announced plans for 1 Hotel Tokyo, slated to open next year in the dynamic Akasaka district.
The property will anchor Mori Trust’s Tokyo World Gate Akasaka project, a pedestrian-friendly mixed-use development that integrates retail spaces and offices.
Sustainability at 1 Hotel Tokyo
As with all 1 Hotels, sustainability will be at the core of 1 Hotel Tokyo. The property has achieved Rank S certification from CASBEE (Comprehensive Assessment System for Built Environment Efficiency). Efforts include reduced energy and water consumption, advanced rainwater and greywater recycling systems, and FF&E made from reclaimed and recycled materials.
A design rooted in nature
The design of 1 Hotel Tokyo will incorporate authentic, raw materials and traditional craftsmanship techniques, channeling the concept of wabi-sabi to celebrate imperfection and foster a serene, Zen-like atmosphere.
Guests will arrive in a tranquil environment featuring moss-covered boulders, plant-lined walls, and Oya stone—a material Frank Lloyd Wright famously used in Japan.
The main lobby, located on the 38th floor and framed by sweeping views of the city, will showcase a sculptural stone water installation, lush greenery, and a ceiling inspired by Zen garden raked sand patterns.
Culinary offerings
Reflecting Japan’s culinary heritage, the 38th-floor restaurant will offer an immersive experience, with stepping stones that emulate a Japanese garden, an open kitchen, and private dining rooms with vistas of the Imperial Palace. The bar will complement the scene with hand-stitched lanterns, handmade textured tiles, and 360-degree seating set against Tokyo’s skyline.
Modern guestrooms and amenities
1 Hotel Tokyo’s 211 guestrooms and suites will marry traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern luxury. Entrances will feature moss walls and lattice wood accents, while bedrooms will include live-edge plank headboards, wood-beamed ceilings, and sculptural TV consoles with integrated planters. Organic bathrooms will boast chiseled stone vanities and deep soaking tubs for a spa-like retreat.
Onsite amenities will span a spa with hammams, fitness center, indoor pool, and outdoor terrace. The more than 5,000 square feet of event space will incorporate minimalist design elements, rough-hewn wood doors, and carpets inspired by the fluid movement of sand.
“To world travelers, Japan is revered for the beauty of its gardens and the serenity of the soul,” says Barry Sternlicht, 1 Hotels founder and SH Hotels & Resorts chairman. “We have tried to mirror this with our 1 Hotel Tokyo. It’s part of our pledge to create exceptional hospitality experiences that embrace the next generation of luxury travelers.”
