Ace Hotel Group has unveiled its maiden outpost in the Southern Hemisphere with the launch of Ace Hotel Sydney. Located in Surry Hills, the 257-room property occupies the historic Tyne Building, which dates back to the early 19th century. The brick structure was revamped by Ace’s in-house team alongside Australian firm Flack Studio to accentuate the legacy of the site. Architect Robin Boyd’s pivotal book, the Australian Ugliness, served as a muse for the design, which also references the location’s past as a ceramics production hub.
“Ace Hotel Sydney has been an extraordinary effort of passion and ingenuity on behalf of our entire team and many collaborators,” says Ace Hotel Group CEO Brad Wilson. “Opening our first outpost in Australia is a dream fulfilled and we are eager to warm its civic spaces alongside our friends and programming partners, who will continue to shape the character of Ace Sydney. We’re excited to share our take on hospitality—one rooted in community and inclusivity, and built for discovery and fun—and to see the hotel become a home for everyone, from our Surry Hills neighbors to travelers from far afield.”
Homages to Australia permeate the hotel’s public spaces, which are adorned with a desert palette evident in elements like the lobby’s ochre-red marble staircase. A vibrant ground floor anchors the hotel, welcoming guests and locals alike with a range of F&B spaces. In addition to a cocktail bar and a spacious sunken living room lounge finished with tan and burnt orange hues, signature neighborhood restaurant LOAM is the sister restaurant to the onsite eatery at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles. All-day café Good Chemistry is also featured on the ground floor in a stretch of the building that was once a factory and distribution center. Situated 18 stories above Sydney, rooftop restaurant Kiln will crown the property later this year with a design by Fiona Lynch Office. The concept will draw inspiration from the work of Italian-born architect Enrico Taglietti and comprise a palette that recalls Australia’s native grasses, sandstone plateaus, hardened blue clay, and lush eucalyptus.
The cozy accommodations at Ace Hotel Sydney evoke a residential-style warmth and feature custom lighting, furnishings, and fixtures. Thoughtful touches, like turntables and radios, also distinguish each chamber.
