An upscale adults-only hotel will soon join the hospitality landscape in Palm Springs, California. Azure Sky occupies a midcentury structure transformed by locally based Cioffi Architect and Anne L’Esperance of An Ellipsis Design to accentuate its roots and revitalize the property as a modern sanctuary.
“Overall, our goal was to interpret the [midcentury modern] style into a form that is livable today,” L’Esperance says. “We worked with our team of finish carpenters to create all of the wood details in the property, including the floating beds with nightstands, the accent walls, and the incredible wood and mirror details you see in the lobby that include the floating credenza and the front desk and bar.”
Upon arrival, a front entry screen heralds a nod to the city’s distinctive breeze blocks as well as the history of the site. A premium cocktail bar also awaits guests in the 800-square-foot lobby. Conceived akin to a comfy living room, the enticing space is anchored by a fireplace and lined with vintage light fixtures and custom textural woodwork.
Outside, a 1,500-square-foot courtyard lawn—known as the Meadow—is endowed with a long fire pit set against the backdrop of natural views. The grounds are also equipped with a 4,500-square-foot pool deck that features ample seating, a bar, firepit, and Jacuzzi.
Ranging from 225 to 620 square feet, the hotel’s 14 accommodations include five spacious one-bedroom suites adorned with a color palette influenced by the hues of Palm Springs’ mountains at sunrise. Guestrooms feature private patios populated by hammocks and hangout spaces, as well as perks like walk-in showers wrapped in white, green, and dark mosaic tile. Stone countertops, custom millwork, stone floor tiles, and built-in beds round out the design-driven experience.
