Nestled at the foot of the Catskill Mountains in Leeds, New York, Camptown has debuted as a novel entry in upstate New York’s booming hospitality landscape. Crafted by Ray Pirkle and Kim Bucci of Ramshackle Studio—the designers and owners of Hudson’s Rivertown Lodge—the hotel from Mountain Shore Properties overhauls a 1930s property, accentuating existing architectural details with new custom details that showcase local artisans and woodworkers.
Spread across 22 wooded acres, Camptown offers social hubs like an honor pantry, a communal firepit, and grilling area. And, in coming months, a swim club, pool bar, and sauna will also be added.
Exposed wood beams anchor the lobby, which is oriented around a stone fireplace flanked by custom oak mirrors. Large circular and arched sofas were also installed around a library table for lounging.
Mexican restaurant Casa Susanna is also featured, heralding guests with a large horseshoe-shaped bar clad with cognac leather and an oak dowel. Sculptural French oak barstools line the space along with a cherry backbar inspired by a Shaker sewing table. A row of custom wooden banquettes are also installed against seagrass wallpaper.
Camptown also comprises a motor lodge of 24 guestrooms and 26 log cabins—many of which come equipped with kitchens or wood-burning stoves. Bold earth tones, from dark green and brown to yellow and red, reinforce the surrounding woodlands across the interior of each cabin. “No two cabins are the same as some interiors were completely renovated to evoke a clean, modern feel, while others were lightly restored back to their original condition,” Pirkle says.
Bucci adds, “Camptown’s 26 log cabins with knotty pine walls and unique layouts were already inherently charming, so our goal became to infuse modern Shaker elements without scrubbing away the sense of history. At Camptown, we specifically played with color and space because there was already so much shape and texture in the log cabins and other materials used throughout the decades.”
