Marriott International’s Autograph Collection has inaugurated its 200th property. Situated in the Tuscany region of Italy, the Grand Universe Lucca, Autograph Collection was crafted by Florence-based Archea Associati to blend timeless elegance and modern comfort within a transformed 16th century palazzo.
The hotel, which is located in the heart of the city near the iconic Teatro del Giglio theater and opera house, also draws inspiration from the cultural legacy of the setting. “The biggest challenge was working with a unique building—rich in history and tradition—while trying to execute a contemporary project that accurately reinterprets the theme of hospitality with exclusive spaces throughout,” says Giovanni Polazzi, founding partner of Archea Associati. “Careful research and meticulous selection of objects and furnishing elements belonging to the history of Lucca—and its most illustrious visitors from the world of culture, in particular music and theatre—allowed us to achieve that balance between historic integrity and modern day luxury.”
The selection of earthen-colored textiles, such as grape red, pine green, and sunny yellow, was inspired by the city’s history in silk production and its vineyards. Refined glass pendants also adorn the interior in homage to Lucca’s glassblowing legacy. The musical history of the setting informs each of the 55 guestrooms and suites, which honor namesakes like Giacomo Puccini.
In addition to Italian restaurant and lounge Legacy, the F&B lineup peaks with rooftop bar Sommitá, which embraces a backdrop of panoramic city views.
