New York-based Tihany Design has completed a comprehensive upgrade of the Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort in Maui. Newly invigorated with a fresh, modern ambiance, the resort’s refreshed spaces reinforce the natural splendor of Hawaii through majestic architectural vignettes that demonstrate a reverence for the soul of the destination.
Included among the renovations is the Botero Lounge. Located at the heart of the resort, the lounge is home to nine restored bronze sculptures from Grand Wailea’s 900-piece outdoor museum, accented by mood lighting from oversized lamps that infuses intimacy. The open-air space bonds with the surrounding landscape thanks to its subtle structure and fluid layout, while an emerald bar counter and accents of blue and pink recall the Pacific Ocean.
“Our vision was to conceive and redesign the various F&B interiors in distinctive ways that showcase the lush surroundings and vibrant aesthetics of Maui throughout each space, yet all feel in harmony to elevate the resort destination and enrich the guest experience,” says Tihany Design managing partner Alessia Genova. “We used this opportunity to pay homage to the original vision of Takeshi Sekiguchi, Grand Wailea’s original developer, by infusing Maui’s prized environmental and sensory elements: water, light, sounds, flowers, trees, and art.”
Housed in an expansive overlook, breakfast spot ‘Ikena is equipped with high ceilings and frames views of the sea. The versatile F&B and event space is lined with warm materials and a bright color palette that channels the aura of a morning on the beach, accented by chandelier lanterns that infuse incandescent light enlivened by a custom screen frieze. The multi-level venue also comprises a large terrace opposite the lower courtyard.
