Thor Equities has introduced ModernHaus SoHo, a new luxury hotel concept in the chic Manhattan neighborhood. Housed within the former James hotel on Grand Street, the 114-room property run by hospitality management company Highgate draws inspiration from the Bauhaus movement with clean lines, geometric harmony, and large windows. An extensive art collection further animates the interior design, which was crafted by design consultant Melissa Bowers and Thor Equities director Jack J. Sitt.
“Our vision was to create a balance and a dialogue between the industrial architecture and a refined, dynamic interior that allows for intimate moments with the city as its backdrop,” Bowers says. “Taking inspiration from Philip Johnson’s Glass House, we introduced color and texture to the interiors to create a private, residential feel in the sprawling space, while seamlessly bringing the outdoors indoors. I believe this project will tell the story of a revived New York—one that is bustling again, and filled with intimate moments, community and exceptional hospitality.”
A fashion-forward minimalism characterizes the hotel interiors and reinforces the beauty of the urban environment. Reminiscent of Europe’s atrium cafés, the onsite restaurant Veranda is crafted akin to a greenhouse, complete with a retractable roof. The restaurant, also home to two separate bars, is populated by walnut and travertine tables that contrast the topiaries and rosemary herb plantings throughout the space.
Breakfast concept and cocktail lounge Jumpin Jacks is located on the second floor, framing vistas of urban sprawl and accented by a palette of cognac, amber, and espresso tones.
On the rooftop, Jimmy serves as a nightlife option 18 stories above the city. Drawing upon Picasso’s Blue Period, the venue is outfitted with lingham wood floors, posh modular furniture, rust wall tiles, and a working fireplace. During winter months, Jimmy will host visitors in a sunken conversation pit lined with blue velvet leather seating and sculptural stools.
The 3,100-square-foot Signature Room rounds out the onsite amenities, acting as a versatile event space with masculine tones, a terrazzo bar, and an olive tree.
Lined with reclaimed wood floors and accented by vibrant artwork, each of ModernHaus SoHo’s accommodations embrace a backdrop of panoramic city views. The Gallery Penthouse on the 16th floor serves as the crown jewel, and is home to a 12-person table and a spacious 1,300-square-foot layout.
