Pendry Hotels & Resorts has officially unveiled its first New York property: Pendry Manhattan West. Housed within a structure crafted by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the hotel debuts as a key fixture of the newly opened Manhattan West mixed-use development. Hotel interiors were designed by Gachot to evoke a distinctly American ethos that balances the aesthetic of modern West Coast luxury with the timeless vibrancy of New York.
“Pendry has brought a real sense of hospitality to the table that reflects a specific kind of New York friendliness. Real New Yorkers know that the city is actually a deeply friendly and communal place,” says Gachot cofounder Christine Gachot. “There’s an old school ‘we’ll let you know if you’re welcome’ sort of urban hospitality that is all about exclusivity. The Pendry team has really shown how powerful it can be to go in the opposite direction. Doors are open. Welcome, come in.”
The West Coast Light and Space movement of the 1960s and ’70s serves as a key muse for the project—fostering spaces for reflection and discovery. To blur the lines between art and design, Gachot partnered with local artists Nancy Lorenz and John Wigmore to craft fixtures seamlessly integrated into the architecture, while L’Observatoire International spearheaded the property’s overall lighting design.
Just steps from the entrance, the verdant, sundrenched Garden Room is punctuated by vertical collage panels conceptualized by Wigmore to contextualize high ceilings and accent lush greenery. The lobby’s signature Bar Pendry is also anchored by a wall installation crafted by Lorenz to accentuate the modern grandeur of the space. An homage to Old New York, Bar Pendry comprises a lounge populated with a fireplace surrounded by floor-to-ceiling bronze and a glowing counter bar.
Rounding out the F&B lineup, Zou Zou’s is the latest lively entry into the Quality Branded portfolio. The modern 75-seat Mediterranean concept was designed by AvroKO with an open kitchen and wood-fired hearth at its heart. Dark woods, off-white plaster, and vibrant blue and green tiles further define the open space’s arches and domes.
In addition to a 24-hour 1,700-square-foot fitness center and more than 6,000 square feet of multifunctional space, Pendry Manhattan West houses 164 luxe guestrooms, including 30 suites. “It’s a palette cleanser,” Gachot adds. “It’s nice to walk in the front door and divorce yourself from the bustle of New York—a moment of reprieve—but then you get up to the rooms, and it’s all right there, just out the window.”
