The Beachside Hotel is gearing up to open its doors on August 28th on Nantucket.
Built in 1960 on North Beach Street, the Beachside Hotel pays homage to the Massachusetts island’s arts and crafts era of the 1960s and ’70s via a design by New York-based studio Parts and Labor Design (PLD) in partnership with the hotel’s owners Blue Flag Capital, the team behind Faraway Hotels.
PLD preserved the hotel’s façade—clad in classic white cedar shingles typical of the area—along with five original buildings that surround an internal courtyard with a pool, grassy lawn, and seating areas.
Public spaces at the Beachside Hotel
Inside, the lobby serves as the focal point for social gathering where lounge seating radiates outward from the fireplace to an earthy seafoam green-tiled bar. Plush seersucker linen bar stools line the bar while conical seagrass-woven pendants suspend overhead from an oak-clad ceiling.
The lobby walls are adorned with works by Rhode Island-based artist Sean Spellman, along with paintings from Gayle Fitzpatrick, mosaics, and watercolors. The space evokes a residential living room thanks to a tile fireplace, warm-hued seating, cantilevered woven chairs, and a custom tile coffee table.
The interior’s checkered terracotta floor leads outside, all the way to the pool where sunset-colored seating dot grassy areas.
Inside the guestrooms
The guestrooms are reminiscent of a residential beach home rooted in references to the American midcentury rise of craft and textiles.
Beds are fashioned with patchwork quilts and plush linen headboards, while walls are decorated with vintage artwork, including tapestries, paintings, and drawings.
“Our original concept [centers] around the history of textiles and craft on the island and a lot of the materials and details we’ve used represent that ethos,” says PLD founder Jeremy Levitt. “The property is really an open layout. Everything faces towards the interior lawn and pool, [including] the main lobby [and] each guestroom, encouraging guests to slow down, wander, and explore.”
