Atlanta-based Sims Patrick Studio has completed the restoration of the Terrace Hotel in Lakeland, Florida. Set at the threshold of idyllic Lake Mirror, the property, part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection, is newly modernized while accentuating its historic architectural flourishes. Drawing upon the hotel’s 1920s Art Deco legacy, upgrades are characterized by new colors and textures that share the muse of local flora and fauna.
“Much of the inspiration for the design came from the Terrace’s long history in the area. We touched on several of the property’s key features, the first of which was the building’s 1920s design motifs,” says Melissa Wylie, principal of design and operations at Sims Patrick Studio. “Bold interior geometry, in addition to the rich colors and minute detailing throughout the space, evoke feelings of glamour and modern sophistication, both of which we envisioned as key aspects of the overall guest experience.”
Floor-to-ceiling arched windows and cypress-patterned wood ceilings remain intact, permeating a sense of Old World glamour across the property. The lobby and entryway were reoriented and partitioned with a playful screen wall, while new drapery provides acoustic support and softens original the backdrop. Textured cotton, leather, suede, and other fabrics comprise the new materiality, which is punctuated by colorways inspired by the neighboring Hollis Garden and the area’s citrus groves. New finishes, local artwork, and a mix of eclectic furnishings—with lines evoking the form of the lake’s swans—instill a sense of place.
