Gilles & Boissier Reimagines France’s Maison Courvoisier

Refreshed interiors honor the 189-year-old cognac house’s joie de vivre spirit

Cognac house Maison Courvoisier has reopened following a meticulous multi-year restoration led by French design studio Gilles & Boissier.

Completed in collaboration with local and international artisans, the restoration celebrates nearly 200 years of history and craftsmanship.

Located in Jarnac, France, directly facing the Charente River, the building—originally constructed in 1857—draws inspiration from Paris’ Pavillon de Flore, a cherished landmark of Courvoisier founder Félix Courvoisier

When he introduced the brand in 1828, he envisioned a place where friends and family could gather, embodying his spirit of joie de vivre—a legacy still realized in Gilles & Boissier’s thoughtful redesign.

The refreshed interiors showcase Courvoisier’s savoir-faire and deep connection to nature. Design highlights include a striking red bar lounge and a “cabinet of curiosities” curated by in-house historian Isabelle Vignon that evokes Courvoisier’s storied past.

The Cognac Tasting Room, meanwhile, is rendered in subdued marble and muted tones to preserve cognac’s natural hues during tastings.

At the heart of the chateau, the dining room features a palissandro marble table surrounded by intricately carved wood panels. Both grand and welcoming, the exclusive space hosts Cognac-pairing dinners.

On the second floor, a subtle gradient along handpainted corridor walls—bright sunny tones transition to deep amber—symbolizes the passage of time and echoes the aging process of Courvoisier’s eau-de-vie in its Paradis cellar.

“We worked to elevate and honor what was already there at the Maison, while introducing a new relevancy and energy that reflects the values of Courvoisier and its commitment not only to build on the legacy of the past but also to look to the future for inspiration and clarity of purpose,” says Dorothée Boissier and Patrick Gilles, founders of Gilles & Boissier.
