London- and Hong Kong-based Conran and Partners has completed the design of the Park Hyatt Changsha in China.
The hotel, occupying the top floors of a tower originally built as office space, features 230 guestrooms across 11 different typologies, as well as communal areas like a restaurant, tearoom, bar, library, function room, and wellness facilities with a pool perched on the 48th floor.
Ascending to the building’s 62nd floor, an intimate, green leather-clad ante-space leads into a spacious, double-height check-in area characterized by detailed timber paneling, a dramatic chandelier inspired by the famous local fireworks, and a woven metal paravent screen that reflects the city’s spirit.

The hotel’s communal spaces were designed as an enfilade of flexible rooms, dubbed Lilan, which are set around a central service area.
At the heart of the area is the Sun Room, a grandiose double-height space that juxtaposes the more intimate surrounding spaces. The Tea Room and Library, which sit on opposite sides of the Sun Room, portray their own distinct personalities while doubling as overflow for Lilan’s bar and restaurant respectively.
Opposite the communal areas is a series of eight private dining rooms, each boasting a distinct color scheme. These spaces culminate on the 63rd floor, where three large function rooms, designed to evoke the feeling of stepping into a grand residential penthouse, are located.

The wellness area, situated on the 48th floor, is complete with a gym, wet spa, sauna, pool, and an intimate members’ lounge. Here, a simple palette of natural materials pays homage to the Hunan region.

Staying true to the overall design concept, guestrooms feature a restrained scheme of residential-inspired elements, including green silk screens surrounding the bed, bespoke pendant lighting, and boldly colored furniture.
The hotel’s crown jewel, the nearly 3,000-square-foot Presidential Suite comrpises a private living room, dining room, powder room, and more.
“Having previously collaborated with Park Hyatt in Jakarta and Auckland, our goal for the new Changsha outpost was to craft its own true sense of place—a home that is both fashionable and reflective of the city’s dynamic essence, as well as a celebration of the natural wonders of the Hunan region,” says Tina Norden, principal at Conran and Partners. “By blending clean architectural lines, both in the interiors and in the courtyard architecture, with eclectic elements, we’ve created a destination where modern luxury meets the rich tapestry of Changsha’s local culture.”
