Fotografiska—the modern photography museum with locations in Stockholm, New York, and Tallinn, Estonia—has announced plans to expand its global presence further with the addition of three outposts.
New Fotografiska locations in Berlin and Shanghai are slated to open in late 2022, while a Miami museum is anticipated to debut in 2023. This expansion will grow Fotografiska into the world’s largest privately owned art museum by several measures: number of locations, number of annual exhibitions, and total indoor size.
“We have been very intentional on our path toward global expansion, and have thoughtfully identified these cities for their flourishing cultural scenes, passion for photography, and forward-thinking attitudes on the future of immersive art experiences,” says Fotografiska CEO Josh Wyatt. “We are thrilled to meet our new neighbors and guests.”
Fotografiska Berlin will occupy an early 20th-century department store building in the city’s Jewish Quarter. Following a redesign by Herzog & de Meuron and Studio Aisslinger, the site will comprise three floors of exhibition space, an event hall, restaurant, bistro, bakery, lounge, boutique, and rooftop bar.
Fotografiska Miami will be housed across a former factory in the industrial Allapattah neighborhood and will be transformed by New York-based Rockwell Group. Spread across a single floor, the Miami location will host four exhibition galleries, an event space, a restaurant and bar, and central courtyard and café. A rooftop garden will crown the project.
Finally, Neri&Hu will spearhead the overhaul of a warehouse complex to accommodate Fotografisk Shanghai. Two floors of exhibition space, an event space, a restaurant, and rooftop lounge and bar will be featured onsite as well. “It is a real honor to call these remarkable landmarks the dwellings of Fotografiska, and we are humbled by the opportunity to reimagine such important buildings,” Wyatt adds.
