Related Companies and Atria Senior Living have opened the second location of luxury brand Coterie. Marking Coterie’s East Coast debut, the new senior living residence is nestled in the heart of the Hudson Yards neighborhood of Manhattan.
Global firm MAWD, which also designed Coterie Cathedral Hill in San Francisco, crafted Coterie Hudson Yards to encourage social interaction, community engagement, and ongoing learning opportunities. “We designed the interiors at Coterie Hudson Yards to mirror that of the most distinguished five-star hotels, where every detail has been intricately tailored to the unique needs of its residents,” says MAWD cofounder Elliot March. “The residence exemplifies New York living, marrying the comforts of home with a fully serviced, 24/7 experience within New York’s only purposely designed neighborhood.”
MAWD employed a unique design profile, leveraging understated, classic hues to create bold design statements throughout. The elegant spaces incorporate luxurious materials such as marble and quartz, and functional elements, including leather-wrapped handrails and personalized “memory boxes” installed outside assisted living units on the memory care floor for personal items and family photos, enhancing recognition and familiarity.
Custom furniture across the project caters to the resident demographic’s comfort and safety, with adjustments to chair heights and stable dining room furniture to minimize the risk of falls. Memory care units employ beneficial visualizations and avoid high-contrast patterns, which could distort depth perception.
Before developing its design concept for Coterie, the MAWD team spent over six months visiting later-life living residences nationwide to better understand their target residents’ needs. One of the results of this thoughtful approach is an open-concept industrial kitchen adjacent to the main dining room to transform everyday meals into a unique dining experience.
