The Brando, a luxury eco-resort situated on the private French Polynesian island of Tetiaroa, is aiming for carbon neutrality when it opens in late 2012. A vision of the late Marlon Brando, the property is being developed by Pacific Beachcomber and will strive for LEED platinum certification. The Brando will implement two renewable energy sources: solar panels installed alongside the island’s new airstrip, as well as bio-fuel generators. Additionally, the developer will install a seawater air conditioning system, which uses cold water pumped from nearly 3,000 feet below the surface to cool the water used in the resort’s air-conditioning system. Also in the works is a wastewater management system that would filter liquid wastewater into water usable for irrigation, along with a landscaping program aimed at caring for existing vegetation while reintroducing various plant species to the atoll.
