Planters Inn, a historic hotel in Charleston, is undertaking its first property-wide renovation in decades.
Set for completion in January 2027, the multi-phase project encompasses all guestrooms and suites, public spaces, and the Peninsula Grill restaurant. Dallas-based Studio 11 Design is leading the redesign of the 182-year-old property, which has anchored the South Carolina city’s Historic District since 1844.
The scope of the renovation reflects an intentional balance: honoring the hallmarks that have long defined the inn, including genuine Southern hospitality and residential-style elegance, while refining the experience for today’s guests.
A hotel rooted in Charleston
Across the hotel, gathering spaces will receive careful updates. The lobby, parlor, and ivy-lined courtyard (the latter designed by landscape architect Sheila Wertimer) will be refreshed with the intention of preserving the charm and character that have made them central to the Planters Inn’s identity.
The guestrooms and suites, meanwhile, will be reimagined with interiors that draw from Charleston’s celebrated historic mansions. The approach leans into a refined Southern residential aesthetic, layered with modern comforts.
Peninsula Grill at Planters Inn
The renovation also extends to Peninsula Grill, where executive chef John Ondo continues to lead the hotel’s culinary program. The restaurant will remain open during the early weeks of the broader property renovation, with its own dedicated refresh beginning in late August.
The restoration will unfold in two phases over the coming months.
