The modern French brasserie boasts moody interiors drenched in wine reds and midnight blues

Chez Nous, a new restaurant at the Marlton Hotel in New York’s Greenwich Village, offers a modern take on the French brasserie, designed to serve as both a neighborhood sanctuary and a sophisticated gathering place.

Drawing on the French phrase chez nous—meaning “our place”—the restaurant welcomes friends, neighbors, and the local community into an atmosphere that feels both timeless and personal.

The project is a collaboration between hoteliers Sean MacPherson, Ira Drukier, and Richard Born, literary agent David Kuhn, and production designer Kevin Thompson, who together conceived a dining room that resonates with the neighborhood’s tight-knit cultural network. Executive chef Flossie Gilles, a native of Montpellier and alumna of Le Bilboquet, leads the kitchen.

A design anchored by a Cecily Brown mural

The interiors, led by Thompson and MacPherson, are anchored by a striking 30-foot mural by acclaimed British painter Cecily Brown, which spans the back wall of the skylit dining room, now known as the Mural Room. Much of the design emerged after Brown completed the mural, ensuring the finishes and details complemented—rather than competed with—her work.

Chez Nous celebrates French Deco brasseries

The aesthetic draws from classic French Deco brasseries, with mirrored coffered ceilings framed by brass moldings, rich dark wood, and flattering coral-toned ceilings reflected above.

A dramatic vintage Deco chandelier presides over the symmetrically arranged dining room, while jewel-toned accents, red wine hues, and midnight blue carpeting establish warmth and intimacy.

To heighten this salon-like ambiance, seating and tables are intentionally lower than standard height.

The bar, meanwhile, was designed as a Parisian boîte, bridging the Marlton’s casual lobby and the restaurant’s polished dining room.
