Masala y Maíz, a restaurant from husband-wife chef team Norma Listman and Saqib Keval (recently spotlighted in an episode of Chef’s Table on Netflix), has debuted a new location in Mexico City’s downtown Colonia Centro neighborhood.
The futuristic design of Masala y Maíz
Crafted by locally based designer José Ignacio Vargas (who also spearheaded the couple’s café and restaurant Mari Gold), the new Masala y Maíz boasts three times as much space as the original restaurant.
Spanning several different areas, guests enter through a dark entryway to find the bar area. Next, the space opens up into a lively dining room with views into the expansive open kitchen.
One of the focal points of the space is a large, commandeering staircase, made out of hand-chiseled concrete, installed in the middle of the dining room. The staircase leads to a private dining area.
Defined by a palette of blacks and chrome, Masala y Maíz is moody and futuristic, embracing a brutalist architectural style, while still evoking an inviting environment through textures and lighting.
Reflective foils used around choice ceiling lights creatively reflect light, while textural walls with geometric cutouts allow light to dramatically seep through into the dining room.
