Independent restaurant group Tattu has unveiled a new eatery at the Now Building on Tottenham Court Road in London. Locally based Joyce Wang Studio crafted Tattu London in homage to traditional Chinese courtyard homes, or siheyuans, where four residences are oriented around a central garden.
“Taking advantage of this rare rooftop venue, we strove to create a beacon at the top of Tottenham Court Road, celebrating the vibrant streetscapes below,” says Joyce Wang Studio founder Joyce Wang. “Embracing the Tattu experience, four spirit animals became residents of each individual quarter, their identities setting the mood and feel within each area.”
An ornate spirit screen welcomes guests to the rooftop courtyard with depictions of four mythical Tattu creatures—phoenix, koi carp, dragon, and tiger—that serve as the namesakes for each of the restaurant’s intricately crafted “residences.” Inspired by the phoenix, a flamboyant house accommodates Tattu’s bar, which is lined with feathered fabrics, charred timbers, and copper wall paneling.
A serene dining space awaits beyond a flower-hung gate in the intimate western residence, where pearlescent shell and rippled glass textures enliven the atmosphere in reference to natural habitats of koi carp.
Marble floors and a traditional stone garden define the stately main residence whose muse is the tiger. Luxe fabrics and with woven liquid metal detailing complement the moody but vibrant space, which is equipped with a DJ booth as well.
The inner courtyard serves as the centerpiece of Tattu, exhibiting the spirit of a dragon with brushed bronze and scale-like details. The other three residences each open to the inner courtyard, which is awash in natural light thanks to an expansive skylight, while a bespoke 65-foot-long cherry blossom chandelier provides a dazzling focal point.
