Gundari marks the first ultra-luxury, five-star boutique resort to open on the Greek island of Folegandros.
The new property comprises 27 bio-climatically designed suites and villas, each with private, solar heated infinity pools boasting views of the Aegean Sea.
Additional facilities include a cliff edge pool with a swim-up cocktail bar, a large gym, a subterranean spa, and an organic farm.
Serenity reigns at Gundari
Designed by Athens-based studio Block722, Gundari was largely crafted from natural materials, creating an environment that embodies authentic Cycladic simplicity.
The 80-acre property exists in harmony with the surrounding landscape, with locally excavated stone artfully employed in the construction of linear walls that hug the natural landscape. Between robust stone lines and smooth wall surfaces, delicate wooden structures are used as connectors in transitional spaces.
Natural materials are employed the 27 suites and villas to blend with the earth beneath them, while open-air showers further establish a connection with nature.
In the lower zone of the complex is a distinct interaction between the architecture and natural environment. Here, the resort’s spa and executive suites are concealed within the earth to create an intimate ambiance. These spaces yield to the contours of the landscape, allowing the lines of the terrain to dictate form as if the building was dissolving into the rocky cliffs.
Gundari’s design plays close attention to preserving the island’s natural environment. Before construction began, for instance, more than 600 seedlings were collected and nurtured, before being returned to regenerate the land with indigenous plants.
