Following recent Mexico City openings like Andaz Mexico City Condesa and Casa Polanco, Bunkhouse Group makes its foray into the artistic neighborhood with Hotel San Fernando.
The hospitality company joined forces with local firm Reurbano to refresh a 1947 structure, retaining original touches—including green encaustic tiling, casement windows, and stained glass—while breathing new life into the space with a bright palette of turquoise, lavender, and ochre.
“Our design intent was to create a sense of place celebrating Mexico City’s Condesa neighborhood, the lush landscapes surrounding the property, and the heritage of the building itself,” says Bunkhouse director of design Paige Henney.
Anchoring Hotel San Fernando’s ground floor, just beyond reception, an intimate lounge stars a custom bar clad in handmade terracotta tiles topped with marble. The bar is framed by curved wood shelves and a rose-colored mirror, accented with recessed lighting.
Another place of respite is the rooftop lounge, surrounded by geometric blocks of concrete perched upon a bold green wall outlining the perimeter while an archway of iron curves overhead, adding detail without impeding light or views.
Also on the rooftop level, the Terrazza Suites are one of four styles comprising the hotel’s 19 guestrooms, many of which feature kitchenettes for apartment-style lounging.
“We wanted to preserve those touches and that legacy feeling of home, for guests,” Henney adds. “Ideally, we’ve created a space where you can feel fully relaxed in your room, restored while enjoying breakfast on the rooftop, or invigorated and inspired while enjoying a cocktail in the lounge.”
