Ian Schrager is set to add the latest jewel in the crown of his Edition brand with the launch of the Barcelona Edition. The newest landmark will serve as an intimate, boutique-style retreat and will reflect the vibrancy of the city as well as the elevated luxury of the brand. Located in El Born, the creative hub at the heart of the Ciutat Vella district, the hotel is a stone’s throw from the city’s beloved landmarks.
Transformed by Carlos Ferrater Studio, the once derelict address has reopened with a contemporary glass façade that reflects the city’s gothic architecture. Under the direction of Schrager, Lázaro Rosa-Violán’s interior design unifies the hotel with a subtle energy and sophistication that embraces its historic character.
A sculptural reception desk crafted from black marble and walnut marks the arrival experience in the lobby, which comprises both a living room-style setting as well as an intimate lounge outfitted with low ceilings and large sheepskin armchairs. A sapphire blue Eric Schmitt chandelier adds contemporary edge next to timeless furniture pieces designed by Salvador Dalà and Antony GaudÃ. The double-height lobby bar, Bar Veraz, glows with aged brass elements and a backlit wall of liquor bottles.
The mezzanine is home to the warm Punch Room, which channels the Barcelona zeitgeist through elegant oak wall panels and dark checkerboard floors. A black granite fireplace complements the leather and green velvet furniture, while antique floor lamps flank photographs from local artist Andrea Torres. Clandestine dining concept Cabaret is crafted with long, velvet curtains to accentuate the sultry vibes of the setting.
Crowning the hotel, the Roof is located on the 10th floor with panoramic views of the city. Lined with Iroko wood decking and wrapped in sliding glass, the lounge is punctuated with lanterns and upholstered furniture in ivory, gray, and blue tones. The marble and travertine cocktail bar anchors the space, surrounded by lounge seating, sunbeds, and a plunge pool. Additional amenities include the 24-hour fitness center, which features a wellness and meditation space.
Overlooking the city, the hotel’s 100 guestrooms and suites are endowed with custom furniture including Spanish leather headboards. Walls are wrapped in walnut paneling evocative of the facades of the city’s old town, while whitened oak herringbone parquet floors span each accommodation. Bathrooms are finished in white Sivec marble and contrasted with brass hardware detailing. Two luxe penthouses are conceived as home-from-home concepts, boasting private terraces, lounge areas, and alfresco dining furniture.
