Hotel management company Marugal has announced plans to transform Malaga, Spain’s historic Byblos Hotel into La Zambra. Slated to open in June as part of the Unbound Collection by Hyatt, the property will receive an update by father-son design practice Esteva i Esteva that embodies freedom through a balance of intimacy and glamour. “La Zambra is luxury and is Andalusia but conceived in a more relaxed and broad way,” says Pablo Carrington, founding partner and CEO of Marugal. “La Zambra takes a fresher and slightly rebellious approach.”
The hotel will honor original, traditional Andalusian design elements like textured white walls, stone and wood elements, natural fabrics, and terracotta tiles. New details like sand-colored polished concrete, Moorish latticework, geometric floor tiles, and woven wicker and straw patterns will also complement the retreat’s existing ethos. Spaces like arcaded patios and lush gardens will span the site as well.
An all-day Mediterranean eatery will serve as a key social hub, anchored by a rotunda bar and overlooking views of the setting. In addition to a pair of golf courses, amenities will include three pools, two tennis courts, two paddle ball courts, a fitness center, and a yoga and Pilates studio. Further, a fully equipped wellness center—featuring a Jacuzzi, Turkish bath, sauna, hammam, and 10 treatment rooms—will be housed onsite.
