Montage Hotels & Resorts has announced the launch of its modern alpine retreat, Montage Big Sky, in southwest Montana. Located less than an hour from Yellowstone National Park, the property embraces its expansive wilderness backdrop through both its interior design and an array of outdoor programming.
With architecture by Hart Howerton and interiors by BraytonHughes Design Studios, the project is a modern interpretation of a classic North American lodge, complete with a palette of timeless materials and nods to Montana’s vast and varied history. “Walking into a park lodge, you would typically expect it to be very rustic,” says BraytonHughes executive advisor and principal Joel Villalon. “We wanted to elevate the mountain living experience to its highest standard by creating spaces that showcase a more contemporary take on the North American lodge and capture the genuine spirit of Big Sky.”
The use of locally sourced stone, timber, and metal nod to Big Sky history. Double-height spaces like the Living Room lobby bar are outfitted with soaring gables embody the iconic Spanish Peaks visible on the horizon. Floor-to-ceiling fireplaces bookend the social hub with a composition of horizontally stacked stone for a contemporary spin on the log cabin vernacular, while an all-black metal fireplace anchors the lobby bar. Regional woods and stones enliven the spa to foster an exploratory, geometric interpretation akin to entering a grotto. Angled millwork and cove lighting permeate a sense of calm and reflect the organic beauty of the natural materiality.
Onsite dining options include signature restaurant Cortina, Beartooth Pub & Rec, the artisanal Wildflower Market, and a forthcoming outdoor grill. In addition to amenities like the fitness center, bowling alley, and game room, the 10,000-square-foot spa boasts wellness facilities that include a dozen treatment rooms, a full-service salon, an indoor lap pool, heated plunge pools, and steam rooms.
A 5,000-square-foot grand ballroom serves as the centerpiece of the resort’s 12,000 square feet of flexible meeting and event space, wrapped in floor-to-ceiling windows and intricate wood paneling that can accommodate up to 400 guests.
Rustic neutral hues define each of Montage Big Sky’s 100 guestrooms and suites and 39 residences, which are all accented with pops of color and textural artwork that conveys warmth. Guestroom bathrooms showcase a black finish that recalls a blacksmith shop, while variegated granite cabinets in a leathered finish evoke rawness to reinforce the rugged setting.
