Architecture firm Büro Ole Scheeren has been named the winner of an international design competition to create a new tropical resort on the Sanya shoreline in China.
Slated to open in 2026, the beachfront project known as Sanya Horizons will house two hotels—the Regent Sanya Bay and Hotel Indigo Sanya Bay—across a pair of stacked towers that will ascend 524 feet above the shore. Described by firm principal Ole Scheeren as “the merging of architecture and nature into a space of synergetic habitat,” Sanya Horizons will boast a distinctive silhouette on the Sanya coastline, planimetrically curved to embrace the sea and maximize natural vistas.
The towering structure will feature several voids enlivened by natural plantings and gardens—doubling the amount of green space on the nearly 900,000-square-foot site. Openings across the façade’s hexagonal grid will minimize structural wind loads as well.
Amenities like the Sky Terrace and Sky Deck will embrace the unobstructed natural views, along with restaurants, lounges, and the Horizons Window, a multifunctional outdoor deck overlooking the ocean. A massive infinity-edge pool, one of the world’s largest, will also cantilever above the surf.
Further, hotel accommodations will include Horizon Villas, which will each feature their own private terraces and swimming pools.
