Thompson San Antonio has debuted along the iconic River Walk in the historic Texas city’s arts district. Spread across 20 stories, the 162-room lifestyle hotel concept features a design by Mariana Valero of Mexico-based firm Amass & G that reflects the city’s vibrancy balanced with a modern sophistication inspired by the Texas Hill Country. “We wanted the atmosphere to project the strength of character and friendliness of locals,” says Valero, “and we achieved that with the selection of the materials and color palette.
Handcrafted materials like natural parotta wood and custom hand-stitched leather distinguish the residential-style indoor and outdoor spaces with authentic Texan character. Rich textures convey an inviting effect across the lobby, where dark flooring is softened by subtle, abstract patterns adorning rugs. Black granite and rusted Corten steel contrast natural wood panels, clad in a chevron pattern, while the vertical handrails of the custom floating staircase are wrapped in leather to draw eyes upward. “Thompson San Antonio’s sense of arrival—with a sculptural staircase lit underneath and hand-stitched rails with a bespoke tan leather—was designed to give you a glimpse of the masculine and sensual atmosphere of the property,” Valero adds.

The seating area at Landrace
Bookcases and large circular columns ensconced in artisan brass belts flank the fireplace as well. In addition to a 5,000-square-foot spa and more than 10,000 square feet of meeting and event space, Thompson San Antonio is also home to four F&B concepts, including Landrace, a 200-seat eatery that features a 40-seat riverfront terrace and a semi-open kitchen. Indoor/outdoor restaurant and bar the Moon’s Daughters will crown the hotel upon opening later this month.
Floor-to-ceiling views of the urban horizon and distant Hill Country are framed in each accommodation, including the property’s 33 suites. Ranging from 350 to 2,400 square feet, chambers are detailed with refined furnishings like custom sofas, bespoke casegoods, and sleek equestrian touches in the form of brown leather and buckle pillow-back headboards. Sculptural, freestanding soaking tubs anchor suite bathrooms as well.
