Mystery and Midcentury Modernism Meet at Uchi DC

Islyn Studio and Hai Hospitality deliver a deeply cinematic dining retreat to the Golden Triangle neighborhood
Published: July 13, 2026

A new outpost from Uchi Restaurants has taken shape in Washington, DC. Marking the second creative partnership between Hai Hospitality and Islyn Studio—following the award-winning Uchiko Miami Beach in 2025—the latest evolution of the Uchi brand offers a quiet, transportive escape hidden in plain sight.

A contextual hideaway

Located in the lively Golden Triangle district, Uchi Washington, DC is housed on the ground floor of a newly constructed, sustainability-focused office building.

Rather than standing apart from its surroundings, the restaurant’s architecture and interiors are designed to feel embedded within the area’s steady day-to-night rhythm, acting as an intimate retreat that remains residential in spirit while contributing to a growing dining culture.

“Our collaboration with Hai has always been rooted in intuition and trust,” says Islyn Studio founder Ashley Wilkins. “Each project is an opportunity to listen closely to place, to culture, and to the rhythms of how people gather, and then translate that into an environment that feels warm, intimate, and enduring.”

Cinematic inspirations for Uchi Washington, DC

The interior design unfolds slowly through references to New Formalist Modernism and the expressive geometry of midcentury architecture. A rich, cinematic palette anchors the romantic atmosphere, utilizing saturated tones of crimson, jade green, and muted gold.

Enhanced by tactile materials and low, flattering lighting, the aesthetic draws heavily from the intimate cinematography of directors like Wong Kar-wai, as well as the neon-lit, late-night streets of Tokyo.

Guests are guided through a carefully orchestrated journey defined by geometric cutouts, layered thresholds, and fluid circulation that create deliberate moments of pause and revelation. Throughout the dining room, subtle moments of concealment invite a sense of exploration. Softly obscured pathways gradually lead to tucked-away corners and private dining rooms, fostering a feeling of closeness that mirrors the progression of the meal itself.
