Toronto-based design studio Odami has completed Shinji, a new restaurant in the city’s financial district where atmosphere, materiality, and restraint take precedence over visual spectacle.
Odami drew inspiration from Japan’s celebrated denim industry, treating the fabric not as a decorative motif but as a philosophical lens. The local studio’s approach views denim as both humble and refined, unpretentious in appearance yet capable of extraordinary quality and craftsmanship. It’s a material defined by wear, time, and repeated use, and those qualities informed Shinji’s design from the outset.
Entering the moody atmosphere of Shinji
Upon entry, visitors ascend a ramp lined in blue-stained wood and acoustic paneling, a deliberate transition that gradually separates them from the energy of Bay Street below. The sequence slows the pace of arrival, turning a simple circulation route into a moment of anticipation.
Inside the dining room, deep indigo limewash envelops the walls and ceiling. The color reads less as a hue and more as ink, shadow, or fabric, creating a sense of enclosure without heaviness. Pale stone and locally sourced ash wood introduce warmth and tactility, grounding the room in natural material.
Overhead, a suspended field of acoustic baffles recalls the quality of woven textiles, while a continuous array of linear pendants forms an illuminated plane above the center of the room. Rather than simply providing task lighting, the fixture arrangement functions as an architectural element, organizing the space and establishing intimacy within what is otherwise a large footprint.
At the heart of the dining room, a central grill serves as both a culinary and social focal point. Food is prepared in close proximity to seated guests, recalling the intimacy of many Japanese dining establishments.
An unexpected finale
Shinji reserves its most dramatic gesture for the journey to the washrooms. At the end of a dark corridor, saturated pink light evokes the energy of Japanese nightlife districts and karaoke bars. Positioned as a destination within the restaurant, the installation delivers an unexpected burst of color that punctuates an otherwise restrained interior.
