Studio Lotus, a New Delhi-based architecture practice, has unveiled its latest project: Taj Taal Kutir in Kolkata, India.

A warm white façade, adorned with Juliet balconies and black Bahama shutters, pays homage to Kolkata’s Neoclassical landmarks, while nodding to Bengal’s traditional khorkhori windows.

Inside, the design draws from the region’s 19th-century social clubs. Guest suites, rendered in a monochromatic palette, feature black and white terrazzo floors paired with black-stained teakwood furnishings. Regional crafts like Kantha embroidery and Ganjifa-inspired art are embedded into elements like tabletops and upholstery.

The monochromatic theme extends into public spaces, where each carries its own distinct personality. The specialty restaurant, bathed in deep red hues and Art Deco detailing, offers an intimate, lounge-like dining experience that evokes the ambiance of a jazz club. In contrast, the all-day dining area is a light-filled, breezy verandah that overlooks the pool.
