The Hedges Inn, a East Hampton landmark that has anchored the Long Island village since 1873, has reopened following a interior refresh led by designer and author David Netto. The update encompasses all interior spaces, including its 12 guestrooms, restaurant, bar, and public areas.
Rather than reinventing the property, Netto approached the project as a refinement of what has long defined it, deepening its residential feel while preserving its historic character.
“So much of the magic of the Hedges was already there: the history, the intimacy, the charm, and the feeling of an authentic East Hampton home with a story behind it,” says Sarah Wetenhall, owner and CEO of the Hedges Inn.
Project architect Kiko Sanchez and his firm FGS Design oversaw the architectural scope of the renovation, ensuring the refreshed interiors remained aligned with the inn’s historic presence in the village. Local contracting firm Fifth & Dune, helmed by Kevin Warren, spearheaded execution of the restoration.
Renewed interiors of the East Hampton icon
Antique and vintage pieces sourced from the U.K., Maine, and Massachusetts (notably from the Brimfield Antique Flea Market) are layered throughout with custom furnishings, tailored upholstery, and handcrafted details. Longtime brand partners and artisanal makers familiar to the Wetenhalls’ world of hospitality and design are also woven into the mix.
The redesign’s most distinctive element is a custom scenic wallcovering by de Gournay, created in collaboration between Wetenhall and Netto for the parlor room. The handpainted scene draws from the landscapes and landmarks of East Hampton, incorporating references to the village’s historic homes, beaches, and natural surroundings. Layered into the composition are personal details and hidden motifs drawn from the Wetenhall family’s history on the East End.
“It’s a very sweet, homecoming feeling, getting to participate in a project like this in the town where I grew up,” says Netto. “The Hedges has always meant so much to the life of the village as a visual landmark: it’s the first thing you see that tells you you’re home, and now it’s going to offer that on the inside, too.”
Reimagined F&B at the Hedges Inn
Following the breakout debut of Swifty’s at the Hedges, the restaurant and bar have also been renovated. A redesigned bar, improved floor plan, and stronger indoor-outdoor connection create a setting made to carry guests from morning coffee through evening cocktails and dinner with ease.
