The Viana Hotel and Spa has been awarded LEED certification, a first for Long Island, New York.
Insulated with Icynene, the roof is composed partially of recycled soda bottles. The walls are insulated with Roxula basalt rock and slag material. The exterior vertical walls are insulated with spray cellulose by Nuwool, which is made of recycled newspaper.

Using water instead of air and a digital sensor in each room, the heating/cooling system monitors energy use in occupied and vacant rooms-cutting heating/cooling run times by 20-30 percent overall. Dual flush toilets and water-restricted sinks conserve water usage.
As for interior design elements, low-VOC paints and stains were used throughout, carpets and wallpapers are made of recycled materials, and all wood flooring is bamboo. Dimmable LEDs and a rooftop solar panel system also reduce energy use.
“My family and I had a vision when we built the Viana Hotel and Spa from the ground up to be extremely environmentally conscious and responsible,” says Alan Mindel, operating partner of Samar Hospitality, the parent company to the Viana Hotel and Spa. “To now be recognized and become LEED certified is icing on the cake for all of us.”
