How did you get started as a designer?
My mother was a designer, and she educated my eye from a young age. I went to Massachusetts College of Art in Boston where I studied interior design. I would wait tables in the evenings after my classes then go back to my studio and work into the morning. I maintain waiting tables made me a great multi-tasker; I switch gears quickly.
Tell us about your new lighting collection with Visual Comfort.
The right lighting is paramount to striking the right mood. This collection plays upon my love of geometric form, mixed metal patinas, rich texture, and thoughtful materiality. The silhouettes are designed to mix and match. I would use so many different pieces within one space.
You’re also known for your interiors. What hospitality projects are you working on?
After my first hotel project, the Avalon, a boutique hotel in Beverly Hills, I designed the Viceroy Santa Monica and went on to design multiple properties for Viceroy around the world, along with other boutique and luxury hotel projects. I am currently at work on a new brand—Proper Hotels. Our debut property will launch in Austin, followed by Hollywood and San Francisco.
What influences you?
Travel is hugely inspiring—it broadens the mind like nothing else. Taking risks inspires me. I want to create a sense of adventure and challenge myself. My process is one of curiosity and experimentation. I take what the client wants and run it through my filter. Being a good listener is job one.
How do you keep the different facets of your business thriving?
Surround yourself with an impeccable team. My studio houses so many disciplines under one roof, and the biggest challenge is finding enough hours in the day to give everything the care, love, and attention it deserves.
